Is Yoga Safe PostPartum?

Yoga can help strengthen core muscles, pelvic floor and spine after childbirth. It can also improve posture and breathing that helps with breastfeeding. We recommend that you consult with your healthcare provider before starting a yoga practice. Generally speaking a new mother can begin yoga 6-8 weeks after a vaginal delivery and 8-12 weeks after a cesarean delivery.

How Does Yoga Help Mental Health?

Postpartum can bring on feelings of depression and anxiety. In a study involving postpartum women, the group that attended yoga classes 16 times over 8 weeks had a greater improvement in their depression scores. They had greater improvement in their anxiety as well. This may have been because of the social support or the physical effects well studied on movement and positive emotions.
